Dungeons: The Dragoning
The frontier town of Phandalin, southeast of Neverwinter at the base of the hills around the Sword Mountains, is a relatively new settlement. It is only four years old, though it is built on the ruins of a much older settlement built close to the then prosperous mine of Wave Echo Cave. The old town and the mine were destroyed by orcs around five hundred years ago.
In the last three or four years, hardy settlers from varying nearby cities have begun the hard work of reclaiming the ruins of Phandalin. A bustling frontier settlement has grown up on the site of the old town, and is home now to farmers, woodcutters, fur traders, and prospectors drawn by stories of gold and platinum in the mountains. The people of Phandalin came to the town knowing that they only had themselves to rely on.
The town has no functioning government, but the townsfolk elect someone to serve as townmaster each year to serve as a judge in minor disputes and keep records. Currently the town is (rather ineptly) run by Town Master Harbin Wester. Though the town has no guard to speak of, the town rallied together in times of need.
Unfortunately, more than a few bandits and brigands have settled here as well, taking advantage of the fact that the area has no local lord or authority to chase them off. A gang known as the Redbrands has controlled Phandalin for the past two months, extorting and bullying the whole town into submission. The gang is led by a mysterious figure known to the townsfolk as Glasstaff.
While in times past the town’s relative proximity to Neverwinter might have gained it some protection, the devastation that came to that city after the explosion of Mount Hotenow 30 years ago has caused the people of Neverwinter to turn inward. The people of Phandalin came to the town knowing that they only had themselves to rely on.
